Protests outside the municipal offices

Locals expressed extreme anger at the fact that Mashego wanted to sell the houses built by the Chinese governement to people outside of the community

GRASKOP- Unhappiness about housing and unit manager Kimmi Mashego resulted in a protest to the municipal offices by hundreds of community members today.

A memorandum was handed over to the mayor or TCM and the MEC for Human Settlements, demanding that Mashego be removed from power because he “likes to dine and socialise with whites and does not look after the concerns of the community” Potholes, street lights and the condition of the graveyard was also included as problems.

Furthermore, locals expressed extreme anger at the fact that Mashego wants to sell the houses built by the Chinese governement to people outside of the community. “It should be free,” said Elias Mashaba from a local settlement.

Also, only 178 out of 400 intended houses were ever built. The mayor and MEC told the protestors that they would give a response to the memorandum on Febraury 25 at 10:00. ANC members told Lowvelder that they are positive that the matter will be appropriately dealt with by the MEC.
