MALALANE – Riverview Preparatory School held its annual grade five market day last Friday. The learners showcased their creative side with all kinds of activities and products for sale. Most of the pupils sold an experience, and what an experience it was.
Aliza Afzal and her mother had a unique idea of blindfolding their customers and then asking them to identify five different products to win a prize. Riley Barry and his parents ran a guess where the treasure is on an island map and raced crocodiles with water-spray bottles down a half pipe. Salman Patel and his mother had the mind-and-body control game that had schoolchildren frowning with concentration. Villiers Mostert had the classic throw balls at the clown face and accumulate as many points as possible for a prize.
Rodé Marais took her fellow learners to another level of endurance as they had to grab as many coins as possible out of freezing cold water and win.
Rinus Marais had more of a brain game on his mind. He challenged everyone to finish, if they could, a pyramid-stacking puzzle. The person with the fastest time walked away with a prize.
Marshall van Eyessen had the aiming game ready for everyone. Pupils had to throw ping pong balls into cups and accumulate as many points as possible.
David Thomson was timing his competitors as they built towers by stacking toilet rolls on eggs and blowing down as many cups as possible with the air from a balloon within a minute. Jonathan Clark had the classic game of feed the loop around the wire without setting the buzzer off.
A game of pure luck was played at Sonke Mabuza’s stall with spin the wheel and win. The traditional egg-on-the-spoon race was modified by Loyiso Mangena and he made the potato-on-the-spoon obstacle course, which had learners running and jumping over all kinds of obstructions. A creative and entertaining game to watch was Zoe Neeves’. She had everyone swinging their heads from side to side trying to knock over 10 bottles filled with water with a tennis ball in a long sock attached to their heads. The old party favourite was also present at Zoe Magwaza’s stall, pin the tail on the donkey and Owami Ntimbi offered the learners the opportunity to knock down as many pins as possible with her ten-pin bowling.
This was definitely a fantastic and profitable day for the grade fives.
