A positive attitude goes a long way

While many artists struggle to make ends meet, artist Heino Kruger, says he cannot give enough thanks for all the work that comes his way each day.

Barbertonians who know this extraordinary young man will agree that he is a extremely upbeat and even during difficult times, his attitude towards life has always been positive.

“There is no excuse for idleness. Long gone are the days where artists could afford the luxury of spending years in a loft somewhere in Paris. Although the idea might still be alluring, and even romantic to the temperamental soul, unless you have abundant funds available, you need to work.

If you do not have work, make it. However, everything is not about money. When you do it only for the money, you’re doing it for the wrong reasons. Love what you do, if you don’t love it, you shouldn’t be doing it,” said Heino.

He recently finished murals in two classrooms at Kleutervriend Kleuterskool. First up was the baby section, very simple but beautiful. “I really enjoyed the end result and loved all the colour.”

Next on the agenda were the two newly built classroom with a jungle theme. It flowed together and the artist made use of cheerful cartoons. Animals and birds roamed around with monkeys hanging from palm trees.

The idea was to make it more attractive, but simple and to make sure it was something that grabbed the kids’ imaginations.

“I believe colour lights up children’s mood and enhances their serotonin levels,” he said. Heino, who is well known for his portraits and abstracts, is truly making work for himself. Soon after the school’s walls were finished, he did a mural of the Taj Mahal for one of his long-standing Indian clients. Painted with texture against her dining-room wall, it took approximately two weeks to finish and the end result was breathtaking.
