Overturned maize meal truck looted in Hazyview

It took twenty minutes for looters to cart away an estimated 14 tons of maize meal after an accident at the De Rust T-junction this morning.

HAZYVIEW – It took twenty minutes for looters to cart away an tons of maize meal after an accident at the De Rust T-junction on Wednesday morning.

According to an eye witness and resident, the truck from Blinkwater Meule had capsized at around 08:30. “I arrived on the scene while the tyres were still spinning,” he said. By then, the injured driver of the truck had pulled himself from the vehicle, while bystanders cut the canvas open to get at the cargo of maize meal.

The savagery with which the people “attacked” the loot reminded him of vultures around a carcass, a man at the scene said.

Traffic officers who had arrived on the scene were unable to control the crowd.

From a video taken by the eye witness, it can be seen how people wearing Transnet uniforms load an official vehicle with the stolen foodstuff. Several bakkies stopped and loaded sacks.

When the SAPS arrived on the scene 20 minutes after the accident, there was apparently nothing left of the load.
