Manthano learners meet reptiles face to face

Manthano Christian School students visit the Reptile Park in Hazyview

Manthano Christian School students of grade R to 12 went on an educational field trip on Tuesday May 6. The learners spent interesting day learning about reptiles at the Reptile Park in Hazyview.

The focus was to teach their pupils the role and importance of reptiles in the ecosystem. “We also want to dispel all the myths about these creatures,” says Colleen Kotze, principal Manthano. “In this way their fear of these species will be eliminated and we try to instil the conservation of these for future generations.”

A demonstration by the curator of the park, Jason Stewart was held during which the leaners saw both poisonous and non-poisonous snakes. They were also informed how snakes shed their skins and they were able to touch a live python.

Another highlight was seeing the tiny six month old leopard tortoises that were only 5cm in diameter.
