Three found not guilty in hammer attack on father

The robbery and assault had taken six hours, starting at 22:00.

MBOMBELA – Three men have been found not guilty in a crime where a man was brutally attacked and murdered with a four-pound hammer in front of his son.

Mr Lenard Buting Monyana (35), Mr Ismael Mabaso (24) and Mr Thabiso Adolf Khoza (19) appeared in the Gauteng Circuit of the High Court on Tuesday.

Judge Mr Eben Jordaan found the three not guilty of the crime due to the key witness in the trial giving contradictory evidence.

They had previously pleaded not guilty to various charges of murder, attempted murder, armed robbery and the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

On November 23, 2007 Mr Frans Mokgalemane (60) was brutally attacked with a hammer and knife at the Lydenburg Golf Club. His son Mr Johannes Mokgalemane, who had been waiting outside for his father to finish work, was also viciously assaulted with the hammer on his legs and assaulted but managed to survive the ordeal.
