Glencore Xstrata donates sport attires to local schools

Glencore Xstrata and Tubatse SAPS have been running the campaign for the past few years. Its major aims are to encourage learners from refraining from any criminal deeds and to urge them to blow the whistle on criminal activities in their schools and communities.

RIBA CROSS – With a view of giving back to the community, and trying to combat crime, Glencore Xstrata Lion smelter partnered with the Tubatse SAPS and sponsored the “Sports against crime campaign”.

It took place at Lehlaba High School’s sports grounds on July 30. It included sporting activities like netball and soccer. Schools that took part in the games included Lehlaba, Batau, Mohlarutse and Mogolo.

On Monday August 11, the two stakeholders that sponsored the event visited the four schools to hand out brand-new soccer kits, netball kits, soccer balls, and other sporting accessories.

Mr Foster Maloka, Glencore Xstrata’s stakeholder and engagement superintendent, praised the schools for the extra effort they put in their sporting activities. He highlighted that the mining company cared about the needs of the locals and wished to combat crime through sport.

“We hope we were successful in teaching the learners about crime and also in building a lively friendship with them, this campaign will continue in future,” he added.

Tubatse cluster commander, Brig Sylvia Ledwaba also shared Maloka’s sentiments. “When we partnered with the mine, our aim was to curb and eradicate crime in our schools. At this juncture, the campaign is bearing fruit.” Ledwaba also encouraged the learners to help the police in fighting crime.

“I have received calls from some of your peers who have suffered abuse ranging from physical and emotional to sexual exploitation. Please contact the police officers if you have fallen victim to these evil deeds.

Ledwaba advised the learners not to be encouraged by their relatives or the tribal authorities to settle rape matters out of court.

The principals of the four schools thanked the mine and the SAPS for handing out the sport regalia and for guiding their learners about their daily challenges.
