Sabi Sands employees attacked

Ms Loma Powrie and her husband Mr David Powrie, who is the Lowveld representative of the Game Rangers Association of Africa, were brought to Mediclinic Nelspruit by ER24 paramedics

MBOMBELA – The CEO of Sabi Sand Pfunanani Trust and her husband were attacked by an unknown number of knife-weilding men early yesterday morning.

Ms Loma Powrie and her husband Mr David Powrie, who is the Lowveld representative of the Game Rangers Association of Africa, were brought to Mediclinic Nelspruit by ER24 paramedics.

A limited amount of information was available at the time of going to press. Mr Russel Meiring, spokesman for ER24, was still trying to obtain an incident report and Brig Selvy Mohlala, provincial police spokesman, said on enquiry that no case had been registered with the Hazyview police.

Ms Robyn Baard, spokesman for Mediclinic, was at liberty to say only that the couple’s condition was stable.
Mr Stefan Broekman of Sabi Sand refused to comment until the police’s investigation had been finalised.

• According to zoominfo.com, Mr Powrie’s entrance into conservation was as an anti-poaching agent in the Mkuzi area for six months before he was recruited as an assistant game ranger at Timbavati. He later joined Idubi Game Lodge in Sabi Sands where he was promoted to head ranger and met Ms Powrie.

Together they moved to Welgevonden in 1999 where they managed various lodges. Mr Powrie was appointed a research assistant in December 2005 and he identified and monitored post-contraception behaviour of breeding elephants. The couple also lived in the UK where they undertook missionary work.
