Suspects in Powrie attack detained

The men fled with Powrie's R1 rifle, but it was later found abandoned at the gate

MBOMBELA – Mr David Powrie of Sabi Sands who was seriously wounded in an attack earlier this week, is still in a stable condition in hospital. Three suspects have been detained in connection with the attack, but had not been charged at the time of going to press.

Powrie, who is the Lowveld representative of the Game Rangers Association of Africa, and his wife, Ms Loma Powrie, who is the CEO of Sabi Sand Pfunanani Trust, were attacked early Monday morning.

Mr Werner Vermaak, spokesman for ER24, said they found Mr Powrie with multiple stab wounds to his chest and neck when they arrived. Ms Powrie had sustained multiple lacerations and wounds to her leg. Advanced life support was provided to Mr Powrie and they were both transported to Mediclinic Nelspruit.

Ms Powrie wasn’t admitted, but only treated. According to unconfirmed reports, the suspects allegedly demanded rhino horns from the couple. However, an informed source said they had been looking for cash. The men fled with Powrie’s R1 rifle, but it was later found abandoned at the gate.

Brig Selvy Mohlala, provincial police spokesman, said three suspects had been detained in connection with the incident. “We are in the process of questioning them and they haven’t been charged yet,” he added.
