Mother released on a warning

The 35-year old mother of two arrested for child negligence has been released on a warning.

TONGA – The 35-year old mother of two arrested for child negligence has been released on a warning.

This came to light on Friday August 29, when she appeared in the Tonga Magistrate’s Court.

The kaMhlushwa woman was arrested by the Tonga family violence, child abuse and sexual offences unit (FCS) for locking her twins inside her house and leaving them without food while she went to work.

She was arrested after an off-duty officer was approached by a member of the public about the issue. The officer then reported the matter to a member of the FCS unit which responded swiftly to the complaint.

When they arrived they heard the children crying inside the house. They broke the door down and rescued the twins, a boy and a girl, aged one and half years.

They were taken to the victim-support centre in Tonga and a case of child neglect was opened. The mother was arrested shortly thereafter.

According to the spokesman for the Tonga police, Mr Mzwandile Nyambi, the children are still in the custody of social workers.
