Police arrest 6 in Barberton operation

Law enforcement officers target crime hot spots across the area, confiscating weapons and explosives.

Six suspects face various charges following a high-density operation conducted by police and other law enforcement agencies in Barberton from September 30 to the early hours of October 1.

According to the Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Sergeant Thulisile Magagula, the multi-disciplinary operation was led by Ehlanzeni district commissioner Major General Dorah Xaba.

During a roadblock conducted along the R438, police arrested a 30-year-old foreign national on suspicion of contravening the Immigration Act of South Africa.

Police seize explosives and illegal firearms

Three suspects, aged between 26 and 34, were arrested after allegedly being found in possession of explosives and without documentation to be in the country. Various cases were opened for further investigation.

In Ext 10, Barberton, officers arrested a 25-year-old man on charges of unlawful possession of two firearms and live ammunition. The weapons and ammunition were seized as evidence, said Magagula.

Magagula added that one person was arrested for allegedly selling liquor without a licence. The team also set up a roadblock on the R40, where traffic officials issued 10 infringement notices.

High-density patrols target key sites

The operation was also characterised by patrols and searches at shopping centres, banks, ATMs, business premises, spaza shops, health facilities, liquor outlets, taverns, taxi ranks, bus terminals and other key areas.

The suspects are expected to appear at the Barberton Magistrate’s Court in due course.
