Stolen rhino horn confirmed to be fake

It has been confirmed that the rhino horn that was recently stolen is fake.

TONGA – It has been confirmed that the rhino horn that was recently stolen is fake.

This was revealed on August 27 when the suspect appeared in the Tonga Magistrate’s Court.

The 29-year-old Mozambique national was arrested on August 21 during a sting operation in which a bag containing a rhino horn had been found.

He was charged with possession of rhino horn and taken into custody. However, the SAPS have confirmed that it was indeed fake. The suspect has since been fined R1 500 and deported.

According to Lt Mzwandine Nyambi the suspect had been in the country illegally. The horn was sent for forensic tests, “After it was conducted, it was clear that the horns were falsified. It was made of artificial products and is alleged to have been crafted in the hope of deceiving buyers,” said Nyambi.
