Trees to brighten up school grounds

LYDENBURG – During Arbor Week the Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC) donated and planted trees at Marifaan Primary School in Skhila.

Arbor Day was celebrated from 1945 to 2000 in South Africa, when the national government extended it to National Arbor Week that takes place from September 1 to 7. Two trees, one common and one rare, are highlighted to increase public awareness of indigenous species, while various “greening” activities are undertaken by schools, businesses and other organisations.

WO Khanyi Shikwambana explained to the learners the importance of trees and the role they play in the environment. “LCRC decided to give back to the community during Arbor Week. We looked for possible places with a shortage of trees and identified Marifaan Primary. Today we plant five trees and also provide compost. We want to teach the children to love trees and to live green.”

The principal of Marifaan Primary, Mr Galie Lusenga said that they appreciated LCRC’s participation in planting trees at the school. “We welcome the initiative and would like to welcome them to the Marifaan family. We would also like them to assist us with household crimes focusing on child abuse.”
