MEC addresses Mpumalanga’s crime statistics

Community involvement presented as a solution to increasing crime statistics.

MBOMBELA – Mpumalanga’s Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe addressed the province’s crime statistics today at the SAPS provincial headquarters.

Today’s Lowvelder reported that Mpumalanga has seen an increase in murder cases as well as drug-related crime and truck hijacking.  Increases such as these were indicated by Shongwe to be of great concern to the department.

Decreased occurrences of sexual crimes, driving under the influence of alcohol and cash-in-transit robberies serve as an encouragement to the SAPS, according to Shongwe.  The MEC congratulated Lieutenant General Thulani Ntombela, the provincial commissioner, on these achievements.

Shongwe emphasized that the relationship between the government, the SAPS and the community needs to be strengthened and maintained to combat crime. “We will educate our communities about safety and security.  Great focus will be placed on community outreach programs and community policing programs.”

The importance of communication between the police and our county’s citizens was reiterated in the fight against rising crime statistics.

“The SAPS is committed to restore our people’s freedom of movement by fighting crime.”
