MBOMBELA – Lowveld SPCA have taken in five horses and staff are struggling to keep up with their expensive eating habits.

Ms Shan Paton, Mbombela SPCA trainee inspector, say three of the horses need to be adopted as soon as possible. The other two were picked up next to the N4 and the owners still have a week to claim them, after which they will also need homes. Nonetheless, all the horses need to be fed.

“The five horses eat about 20 to 25 kg of grass per day. Each horse should be eating about three kg of horse feed per day. We are desperate for people to donate food – any food, we’re not brand-specific.”

Shan once asked people on Facebook to donate apples and carrots and within a few days she received numerous bags full. “It was wonderful, except that horses cannot survive on apples and carrots. They are treats.”

The current grass supply will last the SPCA until about Saturday and the horse feed, no more than a week. “The ideal is to find homes for them instead of accepting donations, but at this stage anything will help.”

The SPCA is currently in dire need of donations. They have taken initiative by presenting raffles but to no avail. “Pledge-A-Paw is a donating project where we ask individual people to donate R 50 per month by debit order and businesses, at least R 100,” says Shan. Donations are tax deductable and tax certificates will be issued. The pledge can be terminated by giving 20 working days’ notice. To sign up for the debit order, donors can SMS their name and contact details to 082 589 1141.

The SPCA is in Medlinger Street, Industrial Nelspruit. Alternatively, contact them at (013) 753 3582.
