Matric exams running smooth in Limpopo

LYDENBURG – The Limpopo Provincial Department of Education said the ongoing matric exams are going smoothly.

Mr Paena Galane, spokesperson of the department said they had prepared well for the exams.

“There are 73542 full-time candidates who have registered for the final examinations this year. Part-time candidates are about 19 673,” he said.

He added that the department had set up 1 417 examination centres. “As far as we are concerned, the exams are going on well. At this juncture, there were no reports of leaked question papers and up to now all the papers have arrived on time. We are also confident that that our pass rate will improve.”

Steelburger/Lydenburg News visited several schools in and around Tubatse. Principals and learners were pleased with the exam arrangements. “We are happy with the set-up and the arrangements. I applaud the department for their excellent work; it’s now up to us to pass,” said Matshidiso Morake of Poo Secondary School.

Principal of Sehlaku, Mr Jacob Moshwana also confirmed his school did not experience any exam-related problems.

But the Professional Education Union (PEU)’s, Mr Klaas Mohlatlole, said that markers have not been appointed yet.

“The department may say good things about its readiness, but we are still awaiting their report on examination readiness at the Education Labour Relations Council,” said Mohlatlole.

The province has set itself 80 per cent pass rate target for the grade 12 class of 2014. In 2013, the province obtained 71 per cent matric pass rate with Vhembe district registering the highest rate of 80,6%.
