Uplands celebrates the Zulu culture

Pupils had a lot of fun performing traditional dances and wearing their traditional clothes during a cultural evening hosted by the isiZulu department.

The bright outfits of the Nguni culture and their lilting languages were celebrated during a recent Zulu Cultural Evening at Uplands College. The aim was to create awareness of the culture and ensure that children remember where they come from and knew the traditions and customs.

The department isiZulu also tries to promote interest in the language and get the children to speak it fluently.

All the Uplands Zulu pupils danced and sang traditional songs or performed gumboot dances. The grade 11’s acted out their Zulu set-work novel, while the grade 8 girls performed a traditional dance.

Parents and pupils worked together to prepare traditional food and everyone was invited to taste it.

The pupils really enjoyed the chance to dress up in their traditional outfits and were proud to share their culture with their friends.
