Old man appears in court for the rape of a minor
The suspect was arrested by the Tonga family violence, child protection and sexual offences (FCS) unit after raping the girl who had taken refuge at his home.

TONGA – A 69-year-old man appeared in Nkomazi Magistrate’s Court today for raping a 16-year-old girl.
The suspect was arrested by the Tonga family violence, child protection and sexual offences (FCS) unit after raping the girl who had taken refuge at his home.
The incident happened on November 19 at about 15:00 when the suspect was looking for an axe in the house to chop wood. “The victim and the suspect were staying together, after the victim had been chased away from her parents’ home for having a love affair with the suspect’s grandson,” said Lt Mzwandile Nyambi, SAPS spokesman.
According to him, the victim was helping the suspect look for the axe, when he grabbed her and had forced intercourse with her.
The girl reported the matter to her family and a case of rape was opened. “The suspect was arrested and the victim taken for counselling. Doctors confirmed that she had indeed been raped,” said Nyambi.
The suspect was remanded in custody and would appear in court again on Monday, November 24 for his formal bail application.
Nyambi warned parents to take care of their children. He said, “When children do something wrong, sit down with them and tell them the consequences of what they have done. Do not reprimand them by chasing them away because some children turn to criminal activities.”
