Guard’s quick response leads to arrest of suspects

One suspect claims to be a SANDF member.

“You cannot arrest me, I’m an SANDF member!” These were the words of a man who was caught stealing a bicycle and two lawn mowers in West Acres on Friday.

A vigilant security guard from ADT in Mbombela, Mr Sam Dlamini, reacted to a house alarm within minutes, to find the man and his partner jumping the walls of the house with their loot. Dlamini apprehended them just outside the yard.

“They first tried to deny it,” said Dlamini. “They said it was their stuff.

“When I said I would phone the owner of the house to confirm, they admitted guilt and asked me if I could just forget about this and let them go, but I phoned the police and the men were arrested.”

This was when one of the suspects allegedly pulled out a South African National Defence Force badge and threw it in front of the police.

According to Dlamini the man said he could not be arrested because he was a soldier.

Police are still investigating the man’s claims, which will be used as evidence in their court case.

The owner of the house, Ms Suraya Vinesh, praised Dlamini for his rapid response and quick thinking.

“He was at my house within three minutes. I am ever grateful to ADT and their quick and thorough response.”

The two men appeared in court on Monday but their names have not yet been released. The case has been postponed.
