Suspected killer nabbed after being on the run for almost a year

According to Mbokane, Sithole stabbed Masina on the left side of his stomach as the victim was contesting the amount. He succumbed to his injuries and was declared dead on the scene.

A 27-year-old man, Nakani Oscar Sithole, who was involved in a brutal murder, has finally been arrested after being on the run since March 2014.

An operation launched by the Elukwatini Police Station, led by Det-sgt Jabulani Sithole and Det-const Amos Phakathi over the past few months, resulted in a major breakthrough in the murder of Siboniso Linda Masina (28).

According to Elukwatini police spokesman, Const Peace Mbokane, on the day of the incident, Sithole and his four friends were at a local tavern.

“He realised it was running late and he made arrangements with Masina, who owned a car, to drop them off at Enhlazatshe and they would pay him R150. It is alleged that Masina agreed to transport them and when they reached their destination, Sithole didn’t keep his promise. He decided to pay Masina a little sum, which was not the amount they had earlier agreed upon,” he said.

According to Mbokane, Sithole stabbed Masina on the left side of his stomach as the victim was contesting the amount. He succumbed to his injuries and was declared dead on the scene. He said police had been monitoring Sithole’s movements over the past months as he fled immediately after the murder.

“The investigators assigned to the case followed up several leads and finally on January 13 they pounced on him in Durban where they eventually scattered the twigs of his nest and arrested him,” said Mbokane.

Sithole made his first court appearance on January 21 in the Eerstehoek Magistrate’s Court. He appeared yesterday again for his formal bail application.
