Mayors visit ST Thomas

“We are here on the 'back to school campaign'. We identified schools that had performed excellently and we want to encourage them to continue performing wonders.

BURGERSFORT – For its excellent matric results, St Thomas College was rewarded with a visit by the Sekhukhune District Municipality (SDM)’s executive mayor Cllr David Mogobo Magabe and the Greater Tubatse Municipality (GTM) mayor Cllr Ralepane Mamekoa, on January 21.

The two mayors said they were proud of the schools’ consistency in matric results, and for putting Tubatse on the map.

Magabe told the gathered crowd, which included the Tubatse circuit manager Mr Solly Lingwati, that they thought it was suitable to visit the best school in the circuit in order to encourage them to aim even higher.

“We are here on the ‘back to school campaign’. We identified schools that had performed excellently and we want to encourage them to continue performing wonders.

“We also visited other schools that performed poorly in order to address their challenges and help them. “Makidi and Seroletshidi High schools remain of major concern in Sekhukhune as they each achieved a zero per cent pass rate. We want them to learn from St Thomas which had 99 per cent,” Magabe said.

He highlighted the fact that as government, they would strive to have an environment that would be conducive to learning. “Learners are the national pride, they are our future leaders, and it is imperative for the ANC government to invest in education.”

St Thomas principal Mr Samuel George was delighted with the official visit. “Our learners were happy to see the mayors, and I am sure they will heed the advice given to them. St Thomas College is on track of being the best performing school in this province,” the principal said.

The school’s matric learners vowed to achieve a 100 per cent pass rate this year. In 2014 St Thomas was named the second-best independent school in Limpopo Province.
