LYDENBURG – The local K-9 unit of the SAPS made a major breakthrough with the seizure of more 200 dagga plants worth
R70 000 on Friday, February 13, at a farm in the Doornhoek district.
The plants were discovered during a routine patrol. “We didn’t find the culprits at the farm. The perpetrators might show again, we will continue monitoring the area and we will find them,”said the police.
On Monday, February 9, they also confiscated hundreds of boxes of illegal cigarettes and two cars during a raid at a farm in the Finsbury district.
According to Capt Mabokalake Mashabela, communications officer for the local SAPS, they confiscated boxes of illicit cigarette cartons worth millions.
“When the police inspected the premises following a tip-off from a member of the public, they found the two cars, a Mercedes-Benz Vito and Ford Territory, parked in the yard loaded with the contraband. There was nobody in the vehicles although they found the keys in the ignition. The gates were locked and the police had to climb over the wall to gain access to the yard,” Mashabela said.
“Once inside, they saw the suspects fleeing from a distance. The officers gave chase but they disappeared into the field.
“The culprits were renting the warehouse and the owner of the building was not aware of their activities. Investigations are afoot to find the suspects.”
No arrests have been made. Any member of the community who has any information can contact Capt Mabokalake Mashabela on 082-74-8027.
