Curro kicks of chess with interhouse tournament

Curro Primary recently had its first-ever interhouse chess tournament.

Organiser and teacher, Ms Janene Bladwell explained that it was aimed at developing the sport at the school and improving the players’ skill level.

Participants from the different houses Acacia, Marula and Kiepersol, aged as young as u/9, all played rounds of chess against one another.
For some of the little ones it was their first time playing in a competition, and some were initially nervous while others had a lot of fun from the get-go.

A total of 54 players took part. Bladwell was impressed with the number of learners who attended and was excited about the promise it held for Curro’s chess.

The older and more experienced players kicked off the tournament season by competing in the Ehlanzeni Chess tournament the following day.
This was the first of six for the year and the results would determine who would be selected for the national chess championships.

The final winning team was Kiepersol with 310 points followed by Marula with 265 and Acacia with 170.

The school thanked the chess teachers, parents and Ehlanzeni chess for assisting on the day. A special word of thanks went to Ms Karen Taljaard.

The wonderful floating chess trophy was sponsored by Dr Johan Eksteen and refreshments for the officials were provided by Village SPAR.
