MBOMBELA – The chaos which erupted at the Short Brown Street Market on Friday has triggered great controversy on social media.
Some readers believed the hawkers, some of whom were illegal foreign nationals, were just eking out an honest living and that police had waited too long to intervene in the situation. They believe the hawkers’ rage, demonstrated by a riotous protest in which pallets and refuse bins were burnt, was justified.
Others feel the that foreign nationals should be put in their place and that they are an open channel to increased crime in the city.
