MASHISHING – As part of the Mashishing Community Park development project, 500 trees will be planted in this town. The mayor of Thaba Chweu, Cllr Bafana Michael Ncongwane planted the first one on Wednesday March 25.
Thaba Chweu Local Economic Development Agency (Thaleda) has been appointed by the department of environmental affairs to implement the project.
According to Sindiswa Mathebula, the accounting officer at Thaleda, during this stage of the project, only 100 trees will be planted in the park.
“Planting of trees is directly linked to the deliverables of the project and will be implemented in the area where the project is situated for the benefit of the same community,” said Mathebula.
“Studies have shown that climate change have devastating effects an our continent and its communities, moreover the poorer communities.
In mitigating some of the impacts, tree planting has been singled out as one of the interventions not only to climate-change impacts, but it will also addresses the issue of soil erosion and degradation. Furthermore, trees are an integral part of human settlements as they provide for life and act as shields during adverse weather conditions,” she added.
“We are excited that this project has been started, since it is primarily for the community,” said Ncongwane.
