Lowveld caregivers rendezvous for first time

Social and auxiliary workers offered a counselling platform and social network to one another, the psychological effect of which had the potential to aid them in their jobs.

WHITE RIVER – There exists a wide variety of social and auxiliary workers in the Lowveld, each with vastly different functions. So different, in fact, that their paths hardly ever cross.

Thanks to the Christian Social Council (CSC), under supervision of Ms Trienie Drotschie, workers from these sectors were granted the opportunity to come together at the first social workers and auxiliary workers training (SWAWT) workshop in the foyer of the NG-Suid Kerk in White River last Friday.

A total of 54 attended. Auxiliary workers basically assist social workers and provide families and individuals with counselling. Dr Susan Louw, CSC director, opened the discussion with a lecture on the definition and characteristics of this important profession. She discussed the importance of keeping the passion for social work ignited and how that could be used to keep building it.

Ms Nadia Mengel, social worker of the family advocate’s office, also addressed everyone on the functions of this office and how referrals were done.

Social and auxiliary workers offered a counselling platform and social network to one another, the psychological effect of which had the potential to aid them in their jobs.

Due to the success of this first SWAWT workshop it will now be hosted once every quarter and all social and auxiliary workers are welcome to attend. The next one will be held on July 31 and the theme will be “sensory intelligence”.
