Another sewage spill has residents with hands in hair
The sewerage problems at White River Square and the Civic Centre seem to be neverending. After the most recent storm, the shopping centre's management contacted White River Post to complain that the manholes were once again overflowing and, more worrysome, flowing into stormwater drains.
The issue is ongoing and was invested at the end of last year when staff of White River Preprimary School were fed up with the river of sewerage that was flowing past their boundary fence and causing an unbearble stink. The municipality sent several people to unblock the manhole causing the problem but cited the true cause as the fat and oils used during cooking processes at the nearby shopping centre, which blocks the drainage pipes and filtering processes.
The White River Ratepayers Association also kept a close eye on the problem and after the most recent incident requested that the ward committee take up the matter.
Later the same morning the problem was reported, the ward councillor, chairman of the WRRA, managers of the shopping centre, head of the relevant municipal department and a team of council officials had been to the site to investigate and immediately opened the blocked pipe.
According to Mr Joseph Ngala, municipal spokesperson, they are attending to the blockages as and when they occur. “A permanent solution to this recurring problem is being sought. Our planning section within the Water and Sanitation department has tasked engineers to assess the problematic outfall lines. The planning and implementation of the project will commence in the 2015/2016 financial year, meaning from July 2015,” he said.
