World Ocean Day
The celebration aims to raise awareness of the role of the world and the significance of conserving and protecting marine environment.
June 8 is observed internationally as World Oceans Day. It is celebrated each year to highlight the importance of the ocean in our day-to-day lives. It has been celebrated every year since its original proposal in 1992 made by Canada at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It was officially recognised by the United Nations in 2008.
The ocean is said to be one of the lungs of our planet because it provides most of our oxygen. The celebration aims to raise awareness of the role of the world and the significance of conserving and protecting marine environment.
In South Africa the observance of World Oceans Day allows the public the opportunity to highlight the impact of oceans on our country and the various ways in which they contribute to our country.
On this day challenges faced in dealing with marine pollution, maintaining the oceans’ capacity to regulate the global climate, supply essential ecosystem services and provide sustainable livelihoods and safe recreation are also highlighted.
