Improved services area planned to be extended

The plan to turn the area around Sonpark into a City Improvement District is gaining momentum.

The planned city-improvement district (CID) for the area around Sonpark may soon be realised.

Mbombela Local Municipality (MLM) recently adopted the motion for the establishment of the CID. It entails that residents and businesses inside the boundary pay an additional levy to the CID which supplies complementary services such as waste removal and beautification to the area.

It is proposed to stretch from Geelhout Avenue in the South to Old Pretoria Road in the north and would include Hoërskool Bergvlam and Rob Ferreira Hospital.

Last week Ms Lindi Schutte of Aksion Planners, the drivers of the establishment presented the progress to residents of the area. The next step is to determine the levy on each property before the owners will vote on whether to become a member of the CID or not, she said.

Schutte points out that each owner will have the same amount of say, irrespective of the size of a property.

Municipal tariffs will still be applicable on the members, but MLM offers local CIDs a rebate on a percentage of the members’ payments, which is unique, according to ward councillor Mr Werner le Grange.
