57 years old man hungry for more medals

BURGERSFORT – While most of his peers quit sporting activities years ago, Solomon Masedi (57) is gearing up for the upcoming Polokwane Mayor’s Marathon.

Born and raised in Sehunyaane village, Masedi told Steelburger/Lydenburg News that running was his favourite sport.

“I always enjoy athletics, nothing excites me more than running, this revives my body,” said the father of six children.

He has been participating in the Comrades Marathon for the past four years. Although he has never won the race, he has numerous accolades to show for his long stint.

Masedi is currently struggling to find a club with which he can train, but his love of the sport encourages him to wake up every day and train on his own.

“I encourage the local youth to focus on sporting events that will keep them healthy. There are many youths in our community who could win the Comrades Marathon. All they need is training, dedication and a hunger for success,” says Masedi.

This year Masedi completed the Comrades in 10:18:5 and received a bronze medal.

“This year’s race was tough, the toughest ever in my life. People were collapsing along the way and others failed to complete the distance,” he added.

Masedi wishes to run in the Forever Loskop Ultra Marathon and Soweto Marathon but he lacks funds as he is unemployed.
