Local bowlers show their mettle in annual tourney
The final game saw Barbertonian team Kosie Smit and Heckie Horn play against the ladies' team of Martie Janse van Vuuren and Joey Bam.
The SpecSavers Pro 10 Lawn Bowls Tournament, which is now in its second year, was recently held at Nelspruit Bowling Club. The event was open to teams of two bowlers from each club.
This could be a combination of two women, two men or one of each and the scoring system was unlike that of lawn bowls.
Every club had the chance to hold its own internal SpecSavers competition. The most successful pairs then continued to the provincial tournament.
These two finalists will attend the national event which will take place in Johannesburg on September 12 and 13. The 24 teams that entered were from Lowveld, Witbank and Highveld districts.
They were divided into four sections of six teams, and played on a Round Robin basis on both days.
In the end the four semi-finalists met head-on. These were two local teams fighting it out as well as another Barberton and Mbombela pair who contested for third place.

The men got off to a soaring start and although the ladies fought back fervently, the men got the victory in the end.
Barberton team Tinus Janse van Vuuren and Dawie van der Merwe came fourth and Nelspruit’s Brian Jones and Quinton Wilson achieved a third place.
Chris Colverd of the White River Bowling Club wished all the players who will attend the national event good luck.
