Locals contribute to success of CMR Golf Day
The competition took the form of better ball and the day kicked off at 09:00 on Saturday. The 40+ players all agreed that the weather conditions were perfect and the golf course was, as usual, in immaculate condition.
The people of Badplaas Golf Club not only love golf – to them it’s a way of life. They believe in Grantland Rice, the early 20th-century American sportswriter’s words, “Golf gives you an insight into human nature, your own as well as your opponent’s.”
The club, which is privately owned and which was also designed and built by the owner, Leon Rörich, is located approximately seven kilometres from Badplaas, a Forever Resort, which makes it an ideal spot. Where it lies at the foothills of Mpumalanga’s Hlumu-Hlumu Mountains, it has unique panoramic views and a challenging nine holes.
Over the weekend players from all over, some as far as Secunda, came together for a golf day which was held in aid of the Christelike Maatskaplike Raad (CMR) Carolina. This non-profit charity organisation also serves the Badplaas and Elukwatini areas. Although no Barbertonians participated, there were sponsors from town such as Barberton Ford.
Some of the players arrived on Friday and made a weekend out of it, staying over in the fully equipped, self-catering chalets and flats.

After a challenging day on the greens, the players and their partners met at the clubhouse for the prize-giving where singer Conrad Cronje performed. The prizes were really great and included everything from a weekend away at a Forever Resort to electronic as well as golf equipment and much more.
The teams which received the first, second and third prizes were that of Leon Rörich and Philip Morris, Arné-Erenst Birch and Eugene Birch as well as Dumi Shongwe and Sipho Shabangu.
According to the manager, Esmé Grové, the day was a very successful one. “This is an event we hold annually in aid of the CMR. We thank each and every sponsor who assisted to make this event the success it was. We would love to see more Barbertonians take part in next year’s CMR Golf Day.”
Badplaas Golf Club has a fully licensed bar as well as a pool table, darts, stunning veranda and DStv. There is also a restaurant on the premises with a variety of meals on offer to suit all tastes.
