Woman dies when car crashes into pedestrians

One of the pedestrians was declared dead on the scene.

MASHISHING – A woman pedestrian was killed and four other people were injured in an accident on Sunday August 2. According to Mr Deon Broekman, a local Hazmat operator, the driver of a Opel Corsa was on his way from Mashishing to town when the incident occurred.

“He tried to overtake another car, but lost control and hit two pedestrians who were walking home along the road. One of the pedestrians was declared dead on the scene. Traffic came to a standstill while paramedics assisted the injured. They were immediately transported to Lydenburg Hospital. The driver had two passengers in the car and they had also been injured. The patients are recovering in the local hospital,” Broekman added.

According to a witness at the scene everything happened so fast. “We just saw a car swerving on the road and even if the two women wanted to escape they could not.”

Lydenburg Police spokesman, Sgt Elizabeth Selwaletau Magoa, said a case of culpable homicide and reckless driving had been opened.
