Illegal turns now something of the past
Motorists who made illegal turns from Rob Ferreira and Sonpark Shopping Centre caused regular accidents. This new traffic island will make the street safer.
Due to the high number of accidents caused by motorists turning illegally in front of Rob Ferreira Hospital, the departments of health (DoH) and public works, roads and transport (Dpwrt) is building an island in the middle of Piet Retief Street.
This is done to prevent patrons of Sonpark shopping centre from turning right into Piet Retief Street, as well as to prevent traffic exiting the hospital grounds from turning right.
“There were too many accidents in front of the hospital caused by people making the illegal turn,” said DoH spokesman,
Mr Christopher Nobela. Construction started at the beginning of August and will be completed by the end of the month.
Motorists are cautioned to drive carefully while work is underway.
