Team grieves the passing of rhino calf
After a constant struggle with her health, baby Rosella passed away on Wednesday evening.
MBOMBELA – Her caretakers named her Rosella because of her elegance-inspired style. Many believe naming an animal forms a stronger bond between them and humans, which is why the death of the female calf on Wednesday night was even harder on the staff of Care for Wild Africa (CFW).
The rhino was helicoptered to CFW early last week after she was found wandering on the banks of the Crocodile River. Her mother’s carcass was found in the area later that day. Rosella was extremely dehydrated, thin and weak, and had to receive intravenous hydration and feeding drips in order to gain weight.
A team of veterinarians monitored her around the clock, however, on Wednesday night her body could not handle the stress anymore. “We would like to say a big thank you to all who donated their time and money to save Rosella,” the team said on a Facebook post. “All the money will now go toward helping other rhinos.”
