Happiness is a clean street

"The clean-up operation was most certainly the most precious Women's Day gift I could have asked for."

MBOMBELA – In August courageous women across the country are celebrated and so are those making a difference locally.

It was especially the pupils of Lowveld High School (LHS) who caught the eye on Tuesday when they embarked on a cleaning campaign in front of the school in celebration of one of their much-loved heroes – Ms Francina du Plessis.

Du Plessis is the marketing manager of the school and according to one of the pupils, Menzi Mkhonza, she is a true inspiration and a mother to all.

A week ago Francina and Menzi were driving in Figtree Street when Francina started crying when she saw all the rubbish that was dumped in front of the school.

“I didn’t have money to buy her a present to make her feel better,” Menzi said but quickly added that he immediately thought of a gift money couldn’t buy.

“I told my friends about the initiative to clean the street and they immediately offered their help,” Menzi explained.

And what made it even more remarkable was that these friends were from Hoërskool Bergvlam.

“We are busy practising our five values at Bergvlam and our value of the week is ubuntu. Menzi is one of my close friends who told me about the litter that was a big problem at their school. We therefore decided to show the public that LHS and Bergvlam had a good relationship and didn’t think twice to offer our help,” Tanita Engall of Bergvlam added.

Francina said she was excited when she heard about the plan and couldn’t believe it.

“My eyes were filled with tears of joy when I found out. I was totally overwhelmed that the kids even realised how upset I was about the taxi litter. The clean-up operation was most certainly the most precious Women’s Day gift I could have asked for,” Francina said.
