‘You can’t live here’: Municipality removes squatters

Mbombela's specialised security officers removed the land invaders from a vacant lot yesterday.

Squatters were removed from a privately owned, empty lot on the corner of Henshall and Brander streets in Mbombela (formerly Nelspruit) yesterday.

Mbombela Local Municipality (MLM) says they had received complaints that the squatters were noisy and littered.

MLM’s specialised security officers assisted environmental health in removing them from the property.

It is unknown how long they had been occupying the plot, and how many people lived there.

MLM’s communication officers says the eradication of informal settlements by-law, which addresses the eviction of illegal occupants or land invasion, still has to be promulgated.

MLM rely mostly on the Prevention of Illegal Eviction from and Unlawful Occupation of Land Act to address these issues.
