‘Worst’ road in Lydenburg to be repaired soon
"We are very excited about it. We also contacted the contractor who refurbished Viljoen Street earlier this year because we viewed this as a matter of urgency. It is not just about the road, it is about people keeping their jobs."
LYDENBURG – Labelled the worst road in the entire town, Kerk Street will now completely be reconstructed and redone.
According to DA councillor, Mr Nicko Janse van Vuuren, he has seen definite job losses on account of the poor surface of this street. “We have already witnessed the closure of Saint Pie and Tyre Boys have confirmed that they are closing shop on account of the town and roads. I decided to get all the businessmen together and had a meeting with the acting municipal manager, Mr Lesley Mokoena.”
He said Mokoena was very keen to get involved and that the project had already gained momentum.
“We are very excited about it. We also contacted the contractor who refurbished Viljoen Street earlier this year because we viewed this as a matter of urgency. It is not just about the road, it is about people keeping their jobs.”
He said the road would be fixed as soon as possible, before the start of the rainy season.
Various business owners met with the contractors of Mahlangu and Mabuza Consulting Engineering and
Mr Sinenhlanhla Manqxele, acting technical director of the Thaba Chweu Municipality, on Tuesday morning to discuss the refurbishment.
Mr Seun Mohlahla, on behalf of the contractors, told the business owners they had already done a lot of patching on the town’s roads. “When we got here the town was in a terrible state and it is still not in the condition we would like it to be. The budget is minimal but we tried our best with Viljoen Street.”
The distance from KIA Motors measures 450 metres. Mohlahla said they planned to redo the whole base layer of the road.
“The road is very solid, it just hasn’t been maintained.”
He said the road would be closed during construction, but alternative access will be provided to businesses.
“Our suggestion is to pave the entire road. Surveyors will be coming out this week and the reparation should begin next week. The whole project should be completed by the end of October.”
It will cost R1,5 million.
