Female officers treated to lunch
The SANDF celebrated Women's Month by treating their ladies to a royal treat.
MBOMBELA – July was a hugely successful month for the South African National Defence Force (SANDF). As a result of its immense success, the force has celebrated the women in its unit with a luncheon in in KaMhlushwa last Friday.
Employees of the Joint Tactical Headquarters of Mpumalanga (JTHM) who patrol the
South African border are praised for the high amount of contraband confiscated during Operation Corona. Under the leadership of Capt Siboniso Maseko, the deployed forces confiscated almost 195 kilograms of marijuana with a street value of over R270 000, illegal cigarettes worth R370 000 and more than R 8000 worth of alcohol.
Other illegal products, mostly cosmetics, to the value of R385 000, were also ceased.The unit also recovered three stolen vehicles in this month. JTHM arrested five criminals as well as 1 183 undocumented people originating mostly from Mozambique, Swaziland, Tanzania, Nigeria, Zimbabwe and Malawi.
The women who participated in Operation Corona were spoiled during SANDF’s celebration of Women’s Day. A total of 100 females were treated to a sponsored luncheon at Elangini Lodge.
The women, as well as the few gentlemen who attended, adored their guest speaker, Past Portia Luthuli of Ligwalagwala FM.
Acting commanding officer, Lt Col Elaine van Staden braved the stage and thanked everyone involved in Operation Corona for their remarkable work.
The Joint Tactical Headquarters Mpumalanga is situated in Mbombela and it is its responsibility to conduct border-protection operations, like operation Corona, along the international borders with Mozambique and Swaziland.
According to Maseko, the JTHM is under command of the Joint Operations Division, whose mandate is, among other obligations, “to protect the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity”.
