School receives vital equipment

"The motion came as a result of a DA oversight visit to the newly opened boarding school that revealed that the grade R section had no indoor or outdoor learning facilities, the sandpit was empty, and there were no balls, educational toys, chalkboard nor workbooks."

MBOMBELA – After learners were faced with serious equipment shortages at the eMakhazeni Boarding School on the outskirts of Machadorp, the Department of Education finally stepped in to address the problem.

According to Ms Jane Sithole, DA spokesman for education, this came after the house supported a party motion calling for action to improve the province’s quality of education, focusing on the eMakhazeni Boarding School, during a recent sitting of the Mpumalanga Province Legislature.

“The motion came as a result of a DA oversight visit to the newly opened boarding school that revealed that the grade R section had no indoor or outdoor learning facilities, the sandpit was empty, and there were no balls, educational toys, chalkboard nor workbooks,” Sithole said.

According to her, grades eight and nine learners were struggling to study as they still had no textbooks while the school furthermore had no sporting equipment and pupils had not been supplied with sports uniforms.

“The library, laboratory and computer centre are all unoperational and empty,” Sithole added.

She said they welcomed that education MEC, Ms Reginah Mhaule had stood by her commitment and had begun the roll-out of necessary tools to ensure that children’s development was put first.

“The department of Education has shown that it is aware of our oversight duty and is willing to work with the DA to ensure that all learners are able to access quality education,” Sithole concluded.
