TONGA – Last Thursday the Department of Education visited the Tonga SAPS in celebration of the Readathon Day. Group of learners from various schools under Leubombo and Nkomazi West circuit demonstrated the importance there of by reading briefly for the police officers and members of the public inside the police station. The learners were holding posters on safety tips around the community’s and children’s rights. Some were written in English and others in siSwati. This project is done nationwide to promote literacy development, advocacy, and motivation of the nation on reading for information. Tonga station commander, Brig Velisiwe Mdaka, welcomed the learners and encouraged them to continue reading. She said she hated the saying that if you wanted to hide information to a black person you must put it in black and white. “These learners are the future teachers, police and president,” Mdaka said. The learners were accompanied by the mayor of Nkomazi, Cllr Thulisile Khoza and MMC Million Shongwe, and the teachers from the different schools.
