Last week Nelspruit Post reported about the bumps which were placed in Hunter Street by Mbombela Local Municipality (MLM) to prevent speeding in this residential area.

However, MLM has been receiving an avalanche of complaints from some of the street’s other residents.

According to MLM’s communication officer Ms Bessie Pienaar, many people have written to them complaining that the height of the bumps can damage vehicles.

“The walls of the bumps are ridiculously high and they are just going to get worse as more vehicles will erode it further,” was one of the complaints. “They also compromise the speed and mobility of law-abiding citizens.”

According to MLM the height of the particularly high bump has since been reduced to prevent any harm to cars, while the other was flatter from the start.

She adds that the municipality’s annual budget only allows for the addition of two speed bumps per ward per year.
