UPDATE: Bloody death for kudu bull

Graphic images of the kudu bull circulated on social media over the last three days.

SKUKUZA – A bloody discovery awaited visitors and staff of the Kruger National Park (KNP) at the Afsaal rest spot on Saturday morning. They found the skinned and gnawed carcass of a kudu bull on the veranda.

Wildlife experts suspect that the kill was made by a pride of lion and taken over by a cackle of hyena.

“It is difficult to say because there is no video footage of the incident,” said KNP spokesman, Ms Laura Mukwevho. “Based on the tracks around the carcass, we can only suspect what had happened.”

The incident became public when it was posted on the Latest Sightings Kruger’s Facebook page.

“By the looks of the marks on the veranda and the trails of blood, it seems as if the kill happened on the veranda,” said

Mr Terry Plessis of Latest Sightings Kruger. “However, we don’t know what caught the kudu bull. It might have been lions which killed it and the kill may have been taken over by a pack of wild dogs. It is difficult to say.”

According to Mr Ike Phaahla of SANParks, the kill must have happened during the night. “Our conservation staff, or rangers, removed the carcass shortly after it was discovered by the duty staff of Afsaal.”
