Bank robbery leaves Standard Bank clients frustrated
“An undisclosed amount was stolen and the case has been forwarded to the organised crime unit for investigation. No arrests have been made yet."
Customers of Standard Bank who had been trying to use the ATMs had been left frustrated since Saturday September 26.
The machines have not functioned for over two weeks after the bank was robbed of an undisclosed amount of money.
Many clients are forced to use other ATMs to withdraw money, which means they have to pay extra.
One customer raised his frustration with the institution. “I don’t know where I placed my identity document because then I would be able to get inside and withdraw money. Now I’m forced to use other banks which come with other extra charges. The one ATM at Jock of the Bushveld Centre doesn’t have sufficient money to cater for all the Standard Bank clients.”
According to Mpumalanga police spokesman, Brig Selvy Mohlala the bank was broken into between the Friday night and Saturday morning.
“An official who submitted a statement told the police that he had received a call from a security guard at around 07:00 on Saturday, informing him that the front door of the ATMs had been forcefully opened,” said Mohlala. A case of business burglary has been opened.
“An undisclosed amount was stolen and the case has been forwarded to the organised crime unit for investigation. No arrests have been made yet,” he said.
Standard Bank comments couldn’t be ascertained at the time of going to print. By Monday, the ATMs were still not in use.
