No case against accused mother

After the mother allegedly confessed to killing her infant son, police could not open a murder case because police divers could not find the boy's body.

MBOMBELA – The mother accused of murdering her infant son, is a free woman after police failed to retrieve the body of the 14-month-old boy.

The young mother allegedly confessed to police last Tuesday that she, along with the child’s biological father, murdered the boy and dumped the body in a dam near her house.

After hours of searching, however, SAPS divers were unable to find the body and thus a case of murder could not be opened against the mother. According to Capt Dawie Pretorius, spokesman for the Mbombela SAPS, she appeared in court on Friday in terms of the Child Protection Act. However, due to a lack of evidence, she was released the same day.

“In accordance with the state prosecutor, the case, in terms of the Child Protection Act, was dropped and the investigation will continue as a missing person’s case and not a murder one.

Mbombela SAPS are still investigating. In another similar case, a mother is accused of killing her two children before poisoning herself. the family’s neighbours saw the bodies of her five-year-old son and 18-month-old daughter on the floor in her house.

When police arrived, they discovered severe bruises on the boy’s head and body, the baby girl had been strangled and the mother lay close by with white foaming from the mouth. Police believe she drank poison after she allegedly killed her children.

The 23-year-old mother of Xhimhungwe Trust near Hazyview survived the ordeal and was taken to hospital where she will be kept under police guard until she is strong enough to undergo an interrogation.

“The doctors at Matikwana Hospital are evaluating her mental well-being,” said Lt Robert Makhuvele, spokesman for Mpumalanga SAPS. “We have reason to believe that she might be mentally disturbed.”
