MALALANE – A card-cloning syndicate has been spotted trying its luck at ATM machines in town. This was revealed last week when a Corridor Gazette reporter spotted a group of men travelling in a white Ford Figo, with Gauteng registration plates. They appeared to be following a group of tour buses as they stopped for passengers to make cash withdrawals and deposits at the First National Bank (FNB) machine. As soon as all the tourists had finished their transactions at the ATM, they returned to their buses, and this prevented them from falling victim to the scammers. This frustrated the men as it was clear when one of them threw his wallet on the ground, before even attempting to make a withdrawal. He then jumped into a waiting vehicle and they drove off. Meanwhile reports have surfaced of other victims who have had their cards stolen at ATMs around town. Spokesman for the local police station, Sgt Bheki Nkosi, said they were investigating and following up on all leads. He advised people to be wary when making use of ATM machines.
