BURGERSFORT – Twelve prisoners awaiting trial  escaped from holding cells at two local police stations last Saturday October 3. The prisoners fled from the Mecklenburg Police Station in Moroke and the Tubatse Police Station in Praktiseer.

Speaking to Steelburger/Lydenburg News, Limpopo police spokesman Col Ronel Otto confirmed that six prisoners had escaped at Tubatse while the other six broke out at Mecklenburg police stations.

“At both stations, the suspects escaped after they had managed to saw through the mesh wires of the roof of the exercise room.”

She said the men were arrested and detained for crimes ranging from rape, robbery, housebreaking, theft and public violence. Police have launched a manhunt for the prisoners.

“Acting provincial commissioner, Maj Gen Lesiba Mashilo, has ordered a full investigation into the two incidents, and stressed that if (police) members were found to have been either involved, or having not followed the standard procedures on the detention of suspects, harsh disciplinary steps will be taken,” said Otto.
