Cosatu marches against retrenchments

The union also demands that a national minimum wage be set to avoid exploitation. It calls for the government to create adequate job opportunities in the quest to end poverty.

MBOMBELA – The Mpumalanga branch of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) marched to the Nelspruit Police Station to deliver a petition to the MEC for public works, roads and transport, Ms Dikeledi Mahlangu, on Wednesday.

The trade union embarked on a nationwide march yesterday to protest, among others, against higher taxes, e-tolls and job losses burdening the working class.

Mr James Mhlabani, Cosatu provincial executive committee coordinator, said a lot of people were losing jobs in the mines and post-office branches across the country.

The union also demands that a national minimum wage be set to avoid exploitation. It calls for the government to create adequate job opportunities in the quest to end poverty.

Other demands included:
• A call for government to release a white paper on national health insurance and urgent attention to be paid to the current health-care system
• A secured energy/electricity supply for households, economic growth and job creation
• A rejection of a youth employment tax incentive.
