WHITE RIVER – The road between White River and Sabie has been covered in a cloud of smoke since a fire broke out just north of the Witklip Dam this afternoon. Road users are urged to drive carefully.
According to the Lowveld and Escarpment Fire Protection’s (Lefpa) manager, Mr André Scheepers, the blaze started on the grounds of a forestry company. Lefpa’s firefighters are deployed on the ground and in helicopters.
Scheepers says the region will remain at risk of veld fires for the next few days. “The conditions will remain as such until the area has received some rain.” He adds that the blaze is expected to last for at least another day.
He says motorists must drive with utmost care as smoke is obstructing visibility on the R537.
