Illegal connections hamper water supply

Due to illegal water connections, the community of Lilydale and surrounds have been experiencing inconsistent water supply.

According to the Bushbuckridge Local Municipality, the Hoxane Ndonga Water Treatment Works in Mkhuhlu, which supplies the town with water, has been tampered with.

To ensure community members have access to water, the municipality has installed 112 JoJo tanks and deployed water tankers.

The municipality says it has appointed two consulting engineering companies to investigate the problem and give feedback.

This report will be utilised to create a long-term solution for the challenge. Until then, the tanks will continuously be used to supply water to the community.

Community members are warned to stop illegal connections as it damages water infrastructure. Water shortages can be attributed to illegal connections on the bulk pipe line, which reduce system pressure and affect water provision to steep areas.

Any acts of vandalism, theft or illegal connections should be reported to water committees and ward councillors in the various villages.
